Lisbon is a town in Androscoggin County.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, United States Geological Survey elevation data and Census Bureau files. Its atlas layout brings together Lisbon’s streets, buildings, neighborhoods, ponds and waterways, and terrain, the town boundary and the pattern of buildings.
From Thompsonborough to a woolen mill
Lisbon began as Thompsonborough in 1799, when it was separated from Bowdoin. In 1802 it took the name Lisbon, after the city in Portugal.
Farming, sawmills and gristmills were early industries. The Worumbo Mill in Lisbon Falls was founded in 1864, and woolen production began in 1865.
Edward Plummer and H. A. Tibbetts of Lisbon Falls developed the mill project with Bath businessman Oliver Moses. The mill announced its closure in 1964; its original building was destroyed in 1987, and the complex was demolished in 2016.
