Named for a Revolutionary War general

Mercer takes its name from Hugh Mercer, a Scottish-born brigadier general of the Continental Army who had studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Princeton and died on January 12, 1777. Mercer was incorporated in 1804.

The newspaper and magazine publisher Frank Munsey was born in Mercer in 1854. His family moved around Maine while he was young, and he spent most of his life in New York City. The 2020 census counted 709 people in Mercer’s 27.36 square miles.
