In the 1870s Port Washington became a sand-mining town. It held the biggest sandbank east of the Mississippi, with barges ready for Manhattan. About 140 million cubic yards of its sand became concrete for the Empire State and Chrysler buildings and the subway. In 1998 the old pits became the Harbor Links golf course.
