Did You Know?

Shemya Island lies near Attu, at the far western end of the Aleutians. No one lived here until military forces landed on May 23, 1943. Air Force work was cut back after World War II. But the island made an ideal refueling stop for Air Force planes, so Eareckson Air Station is still operating. That's from the State of Alaska community database.
