This vintage map of Pensacola, Florida was created in 1885 by Norris, Wellge & Co., with lithography by Beck & Pauli of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The map shows a bird’s eye view of Pensacola as it once was, including street names, old landmarks, railroads, wharves, ships, hotels, churches, businesses, and the busy harbor along Pensacola Bay.  This is the highest quality colorized version of the map to exist. It was restored and colorized by KNOWOL.

Historic Pensacola landmarks on the map include the New Continental Hotel, Merchants’ Hotel, The Navy Yards, Palafox Wharf, Pensacola Cotton Compress, Custom House, Court House and Post Office, County Court House, County Jail, Opera House, Marine Hospital, Osceola Club Building, First National Bank, Brent’s Bank, Pensacola Hotel, the L. & N. and P. & A. Railroad Passenger Depot, and many of the churches, streets, docks, and waterfront businesses that shaped the city in the late 1800s.

At the time this map was drawn, Pensacola was one of the most important harbor cities on the Gulf Coast. The city was built around its deep-water port, with ships crowding the waterfront, railroads carrying goods in and out of town, and Palafox Street serving as the center of local business and civic life. The wharves, hotels, churches, rail lines, warehouses, and sailing vessels shown on this map capture Pensacola during a period when the city was growing through shipping, lumber, naval activity, tourism, and trade.
