A school beside a ledge, and Slim Goodbody

Lincolnville was incorporated in 1802 from Canaan and Ducktrap plantations and named for General Benjamin Lincoln. Its first school was a three-sided log cabin behind Nathan Knight’s home, with a rock ledge forming the fourth wall and supporting a blackboard.

John Burstein, the creator and performer of Slim Goodbody, has made his home in Lincolnville. He created the character in 1975 after writing songs and skits about anatomy for children at the Floating Hospital in New York City.

Slim Goodbody appeared on Captain Kangaroo and had a PBS series, Inside Story, in 1980. Burstein’s programs also taught exercise, hygiene and nutrition, and he wrote educational books for children.
