Water power on the Kezar River
Lovell was incorporated in 1800 from New Suncook Plantation. The Kezar River supplied power for its nineteenth-century mills.
Local workshops made spools, lumber, axe handles, carriages, sleighs and cabinet work. Farms were another part of the town’s economy.
After the Civil War, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad reached neighboring Fryeburg. Visitors came to Kezar Lake, and inns and hotels opened in Lovell.
