A Lubec native and the Appalachian Trail
Lubec separated from Eastport and was incorporated in 1811. Its name comes from the German city of Lubeck, and its early industries included fishing, agriculture and boatbuilding.
Lawyer, hiker and explorer Myron Avery was born in Lubec in 1899. He chaired the Appalachian Trail Conference from 1931 to 1952 and worked on measuring, clearing and documenting the trail.
Avery Peak on Bigelow Mountain was named for him after his death. That mountain is elsewhere in Maine, while Lubec was his birthplace.
