Lockport is named for its flight of Erie Canal locks, which raise boats up the Niagara Escarpment. A large share of the first settlers were Quakers, and the area became a stronghold of the fight against slavery. Carved from Cambria and Royalton, the town was formed in 1824. That was the year the canal was finished as far as Lockport.
