The Bloomingburg Cemetery marker tells a story of helping people reach freedom. The Presbyterian church and cemetery began here on March 7, 1818. They stood in the northwest corner of today's cemetery grounds. In later years, the church became a center for work against slavery. Reverend William Dickey and other church members spoke out and took action.
By the mid-1800s, Bloomingburg was an area center for the Underground Railroad. A growing African American community and local work against slavery helped make that possible. People escaping slavery received help on their way north to freedom. The cemetery printed near the bottom of this map connects that history to a place you can find today.
