How Hiram College started in 1850
Hiram is best known for its college. An Ohio historical marker tells how it started. The Disciples of Christ founded the school in 1850. Its first name was the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute. It became Hiram College in 1867. From the start, it taught both men and women. The marker calls it an early example of successful coeducation.
James A. Garfield and Hinsdale Street
The school's most famous leader was James A. Garfield. He ran it from 1857 to 1861. Later he became the 20th president of the United States. Henry Howe wrote about Hiram in 1891. He said the village was "especially noted as the seat of Hiram College, the institution where James A. Garfield was educated." He also counted about 500 people and called it "a fine fruit and dairy region." Today the marker stands on Garfield Road in front of Hinsdale Hall. The James A. Garfield House, on Hinsdale Street, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
