Hawthorn Hill was the home of Orville Wright. It stands where Harman Avenue meets Park Avenue, and it joined the National Register in 1974. Its National Register nomination tells a few good stories. While the house was still on paper, Wilbur wrote to Orville about the new plans. He said most rooms were smaller than before, "and only the price has been enlarged." Orville was very shy. He didn't like to speak in public. The nomination says he "invented" Hawthorn Hill as a way to shut out the world.

Orville put his own ideas into the house, too. For Carrie Grumbach, he built a central vacuum system into the walls. It only needed emptying once a year. Carrie found it a bother and wouldn't use it. A short way south, the Wright Library at 1776 Far Hills Avenue was added to the National Register in 2013.
