If you grew up in Hulltown or Raineytown, or along Dawson Scottdale Road, this map shows the hills you know. It's a modern aerial view of Lower Tyrone Township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, made from modern data and given a vintage look. Green hills fold across the whole sheet. A wide blue river bends along the bottom, past Dawson, Hulltown and Raineytown. A smaller stream winds across the top. Small red shapes mark the buildings along the country roads in between.

How Lower Tyrone split from old Tyrone
Lower Tyrone used to be half of something bigger. The 1882 History of Fayette County says Upper and Lower Tyrone had been separate for less than five years. Before that, they were one township, called Tyrone, for a long time. When it was split, the eastern part became Upper Tyrone. The western part became Lower Tyrone. The book says the new line started at the Youghiogheny River, a short distance below Broad Ford. From there it ran north.
The same book says the old township had the Youghiogheny on its south side. On the west, it had the river and Perry Township. That river is the wide blue band that curves along the bottom of the map. The book also names a stream called Hickman's Run. It flows south through Lower Tyrone and into the river. Hickman Road is printed on the map too.
