The Sellers Family and the Millbourne Mills
Millbourne's best-known story is its flour mill. The History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, printed in 1884, tells it. Samuel Sellers was a weaver from Derbyshire, England. He settled on this land in 1682. The first record of a dam here comes from a 1752 deed by his grandson, John Sellers. That dam sat on Cobb's Creek. In 1814 another John Sellers built a new mill for his son, also named John. The son had learned the miller's trade under Thomas Steel, who ran an old mill on the spot. The new one became known as Millbourne Mills.
The family kept the mill going for generations. Steam power was added in 1876. In 1883 the mill bought 256,663 bushels of wheat and made more than 53,000 barrels of flour. By 1884 it was owned by William, John and Nathan Sellers, grandsons of the John Sellers who built it in 1814. On the map, a creek still curls around the north side of the borough, just above the rooftops. Sellers Avenue is printed on the map and shares the family's name.
