A hike in Arcadia, a drive down the New London Turnpike, the old ski hill at Escoheag: that’s West Greenwich. This map prints the Arcadia Management Area, Escoheag and Kitts Corner, the Queen River Preserve and the Eleanor Tremblay Preserve, Dead Swamp and the Stephen Allen House.
West Greenwich is in Kent County.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief around the Queen River Preserve and the Eleanor Tremblay Preserve comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data. The streets come from Census Bureau files, down to the New London Turnpike, and the Census Bureau puts the town at 51.3 square miles, 50.6 of them land. The Stephen Allen House is on the National Register of Historic Places, and we checked it against National Park Service records. West Greenwich had 6,528 people at the 2020 census.
A town named for Greenwich
West Greenwich was separated from East Greenwich in 1741 and takes its name from the old town of Greenwich in Kent, England. Its children go to school in the Exeter-West Greenwich Regional School District. The town page lists four historic places: the Louttit Library of 1936, the West Greenwich Baptist Church and Cemetery, the Stephen Allen House and Hopkins Hollow Village, which it shares with Coventry and which joined the National Register in 2010.
The West Greenwich Baptist Church and Cemetery, known as the Plain Meeting House, stands where Plain Meeting House Road meets Liberty Hill Road in West Greenwich Center. The Independent and Union Society built it around 1822 as a meeting house for all the local Christian congregations, and it took its name from the “plain” of West Greenwich Center. Two Baptist congregations used it most: the West Greenwich Baptist Church, founded in 1750, and a Six Principle Baptist branch started by the Maple Root church a few miles north. They merged in 1868 and kept the West Greenwich Baptist Church name and the building, and Sunday services went on well into the 1900s. Its page calls it the oldest building of its type in the western edge of Rhode Island. It joined the National Register in 1978.
The Stephen Allen House
Stephen Allen, a farmer, built his Cape-style house around 1787 on Sharp Street, at the northeast corner where it meets Route 102. It’s a story and a half, five bays wide, with a central chimney and a front door framed in a later Greek Revival surround. Beside it stands a small outbuilding that’s now used as a horse stable, and its page says evidence suggests it was built before 1862 as a store. The house joined the National Register in 1978.

Arcadia and Escoheag
The Arcadia Management Area spreads across West Greenwich, Exeter, Richmond and Hopkinton, 14,000 acres that its page calls the state’s largest recreational area. Old logging roads and single-track trails wind through it for hiking, running, mountain biking and horseback riding, and people come to picnic, fish and paddle; in winter some of the roads close to everything but foot traffic. Part of the film Moonrise Kingdom was shot there in 2011. Escoheag Hill, a 560-foot hill off Escoheag Hill Road, lies inside Arcadia. It’s pronounced ES-ko-hog. The Pine Top Ski Area opened on it for the 1965-66 season with two T-bar lifts, night skiing and snowmaking, and ran until about 1980.
Around the map
Find Dead Swamp on the map and you’ve found the start of the Queen River. It rises there and runs about 10.7 miles due south through Exeter into South Kingstown, where it meets Glen Rock Brook and becomes the Usquepaug River. The Queen River Preserve and the Eleanor Tremblay Preserve, Escoheag and Kitts Corner are on the map too. The Wickaboxet State Forest, 678 acres on Plain Meeting House Road, was founded in 1932. The New London Turnpike, today’s Route 3, dates from 1815.
This map of West Greenwich is right for an office, library or den, and it can help teach children the geography and history of a quiet forest town. KNOWOL made it in 2026 for people who call West Greenwich home, from Escoheag to Kitts Corner, and it shows the town as it looks today.
