Norton Townshend, Avon's Farm Doctor
Avon's best-known early citizen was Norton S. Townshend. He came to Avon with his parents in 1830, when he was a boy. He lived here until he died in 1895. He was a farmer and a country doctor. His Ohio historical marker says he brought field drainage tile to Avon. That tile made Avon's farmland much more productive. As a well-grown boy he also helped start a reading club in town. The 1879 History of Lorain County says its good effect was still felt in Avon years later.
Townshend served in Congress from 1851 to 1853, and later in the Ohio Senate. He belonged to the Free Soil Party, which stood against slavery. He spoke up for the rights of women and free Black people. Later he helped start the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College in Columbus. He sat on its first board and was its first professor of farming. In 1878 that college became Ohio State University. Townshend Hall there is named for him. His marker stands at Avon Town Hall on Detroit Road. Look at the green fields at the edges of the map. Farmland like that is what his drainage tile helped.
