East Millinocket is a town in Penobscot County, with 1,572 people at the 2020 census.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey data and gave it the look of an old atlas. The Census Bureau measures the town at 7.81 square miles, 0.71 of them water, and its files give the streets and the town line. United States Geological Survey elevation data shades the ground, and East Millinocket has a listed elevation of 427 feet.
A paper town from the start
The town and its paper mill share a year. Great Northern Paper, which grew out of a plan to harness the West Branch of the Penobscot River, opened its first newsprint mill in Millinocket in 1900, a second in Madison in 1906, and a third here in East Millinocket in 1907, with its own dam and hydroelectric plant. The town was incorporated the same year. At its peak in the 1970s and 1980s, Great Northern made 16.4 percent of the newsprint produced in the United States. Millinocket, the company’s first mill town, is 8 miles to the west.
The mill changed hands many times after Georgia-Pacific bought the company in 1990. It was restarted in 2011, when more than 250 people were hired within the year, and it closed for good in 2014. In 2020 the town of East Millinocket bought the old mill site for 1.45 million dollars, and in 2021 part of it was leased to Standard Biocarbon to build a plant that turns low-grade wood into biocarbon.
Schenck High School
The town’s high school carries the name of Garrett Schenck, a paper executive who helped establish the first Katahdin-region mills in East Millinocket and Millinocket and made a large gift toward the first Schenck High School building in 1927. The present campus opened in 1958, and since 2011 Opal Myrick Elementary School has shared it. Schenck serves East Millinocket, Medway and Woodville. In 2014 Gloria MacKenzie, an area woman who had won the Powerball lottery, gave 1.8 million dollars to fix the school’s leaking roof. Mike Michaud, who went on to serve in the United States Congress, is a Schenck graduate. Since 1987 the town has also been home to the Katahdin Region Higher Education Center, set up jointly by Eastern Maine Community College and the University of Maine System.
