Great Pond is a town in Hancock County.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, combining modern geography with the look of a vintage atlas. United States Geological Survey elevation data shapes the terrain, and Census Bureau files supply the roads and municipal boundary. Buildings, ponds and waterways complete the aerial view.
A town and an educator
Great Pond was organized as a plantation in 1840 and became a town in 1981. Its population was 61 at the 2020 census. This is the Hancock County town, whose map brings local roads, buildings and water features together within its municipal boundary.
Gleason Archer Sr. was born in Great Pond in 1880 and went on to establish the school that became Suffolk University in Boston. He started teaching law in his home in 1906, then moved classes to his law offices the following year. His aim was to make legal education available across differences of class, race and religion.
Archer’s school expanded into arts and sciences in 1934 and business in 1937. He also wrote legal textbooks and books on broadcasting. The educational work happened in Boston, while his own story began in Great Pond.
