From Caldersburgh to Morgan

Vermont granted this town on November 6, 1780, under the name Caldersburgh. Its first settler, Nathan Wilcox, came in 1800, and on October 19, 1801, the name changed to Morgan, for John Morgan, a landholder here. The town organized on March 25, 1807, and Rufus Stewart was its first representative in the legislature, in 1811 and 1812; Jotham Cummings and Ira Leavens took the seat several times in the years after. During the Civil War the town furnished forty-seven enlisted men. The town has two villages, Morgan and Morgan Center.

Seymour Lake

Seymour Lake covers 1,732 acres, and the town’s page counts it the third largest lake lying wholly inside Vermont, after Willoughby Lake and Lake Bomoseen. It’s named for Israel Seymour, one of the original grantees, and the Native name for it was Namagonic, “salmon trout spearing place.” The lake sits on a tributary of the Clyde River and is one of only two deep, cold, nutrient-poor lakes in the Clyde River system, the other being nearby Echo Lake. Its dam, finished in 1928 and rebuilt in 2004, stands in Charleston and is used for hydroelectric power. Bass, trout, perch and salmon swim here, and ice fishing is popular in winter. A prevention program begun in 1999 posts greeters at the state fishing access in Morgan Center to check boats coming from other waters, guarding against the Eurasian water milfoil and zebra mussels already found in many nearby lakes.
